Combat & Hex Magic: Mastering Daytime Swordplay
A deep dive into The Blood of Dawnwalker's daytime combat — four-directional blocking and parrying, activation charges, Hex magic, and execution moves.
By day, Coen is human — and Rebel Wolves has said it set out to build a swordplay system that could “set a new standard for RPGs.” Daytime combat is deliberate, defensive, and skill-based, the polar opposite of the nighttime predator. Here’s how it works and how to master it.
Four-directional blocking and parrying
The heart of daytime combat is directional commitment. You choose one of four directions to attack or to block and parry. That makes fights a duel of reads and timing rather than a button-mash:
- Block in the right direction to absorb an incoming blow.
- Parry with precise timing to open the enemy up.
- Attack from the direction your foe isn’t defending to land clean hits.
Against skilled human opponents, sloppy swinging gets punished. Patience and reading your enemy win fights.
Activation charges: your resource
As you deal damage, you build activation charges. These are the fuel for your most powerful options, so combat becomes a rhythm: land clean hits to bank charges, then spend them at the right moment.
Hex magic
Spend charges on Hex magic — powerful spells that supplement your blade. Hexes give human Coen a burst of offensive power that a pure swordsman wouldn’t have, and they’re a major reason to invest in the magical side of your skill trees.
Executions
The other use for charges is executions — finishing moves that deal devastating damage. Save them for staggered or weakened enemies to end dangerous fights quickly. Aggressive, well-timed execution play can turn a tough duel in your favor.
Putting it together
A strong daytime loop looks like this:
- Read your opponent and defend with directional blocks/parries.
- Land clean, directional attacks to bank activation charges.
- Spend charges on a Hex to break the enemy’s rhythm — or an execution to finish them.
How far you lean into Hex magic versus raw swordsmanship is a build choice. See Builds & Skill Trees to plan it, and Vampire Powers & Wolf Form for the night half of your kit. The full overview lives in Gameplay Systems Explained.
