The Blood of Dawnwalker isn’t a power fantasy about being a cool vampire. Its story is built on a much more human hook: a young man trying to save his family, who gets cursed with a power he never asked for. Here’s the full setup — spoiler-free for anything beyond the game’s announced premise.

The world: Vale Sangora, AD 1347

The game takes place in 1347, in a fictional valley called Vale Sangora, set “somewhere in the Carpathians” in Central/Southeastern Europe. It’s a grim moment in history: plague is spreading through the population just as an ancient evil tightens its grip. The vampire lord who rules the valley levies a blood tax on the living, and the humans beneath him are sliding into servitude and despair.

This is folklore-flavored dark fantasy — closer to Eastern-European vampire myth than the gothic-romance vampire of most games.

Coen: the reluctant Dawnwalker

You play Coen, born to a peasant family as the eldest of four children. He started working the silver mines alongside his father as a boy. He dreamed of leaving the valley for adventure, but never could — his family needed him, and he wouldn’t abandon them.

That mining past becomes the pivot of the whole story. Years of exposure gave Coen silver poisoning, and when the vampire lord Brencis tries to turn him, the silver in his blood stops the transformation from completing. The result: Coen becomes a Dawnwalker — fully human by day, vampire by night, belonging to neither world.

The family at the heart of it

Coen’s motivation is personal:

  • Lunka — his little sister, who is stricken with the plague.
  • Esme — his mother.

Brencis saves Lunka with his blood, then immediately turns that mercy into leverage, effectively holding Coen’s family hostage. Coen is left with roughly 30 days to save them. If you’re worried that means a stressful real-time clock, the director has publicly reassured players it isn’t a punishing countdown — we cover exactly how it works in our 30-day time limit explainer.

Brencis: an ancient, Roman vampire

The antagonist, Brencis, was born in the Roman Empire in AD 131 as Caeso Burrienus Laurentius, into a wealthy noble family. Over more than a thousand years he became the formidable Lord of Vampires who now rules Vale Sangora. He commands a circle of vampire officers, giving the game a roster of memorable, dangerous foes rather than a single final boss.

Why the setup works

The genius of the premise is that it ties the mechanics to the emotion: you’re human by day because Coen is still human, clinging to his family; you’re a monster by night because that’s the price of the power he needs to save them. Every choice about when and how to use that power carries narrative weight.
