A sweeping view over a fog-filled Carpathian valley with scattered villages and a distant castle

The Blood of Dawnwalker unfolds in one carefully built place: Vale Sangora. Understanding the world — and how the game wants you to move through it — sets you up to get the most out of every play session. Here’s a spoiler-free guide to the setting and exploration.

Where and when

Vale Sangora is a fictional valley nestled somewhere in the Carpathian Mountains of Central/Southeastern Europe, in the year 1347. It’s a grim, folkloric dark fantasy: plague ravages the population while the ancient vampire lord Brencis rules from above, levying a brutal blood tax on the living. For the full story setup, see our Story, Setting & Characters guide.

A “narrative sandbox,” not a giant map

Rebel Wolves deliberately avoids “open world.” They’ve said the world “isn’t that big” — and that’s a feature. A contained valley let the team “go crazy with actual content,” packing the space with hand-crafted quests, characters, and reactivity rather than filler. The payoff: exploration that consistently means something, and a tighter, denser RPG (see our length guide).

Day and night change how you explore

The single most important thing about traversing Vale Sangora is that time of day transforms it:

  • By day (human Coen): you move openly, talk to NPCs, gather information, and find peaceful routes through situations.
  • By night (vampire Coen): you gain mobility and power — wall-walking, Shadowstep, and the wolf form for fast travel — but you’re hunted, so stealth matters and your infamy can rise.

The same location can offer completely different opportunities depending on when you visit it.

How to explore well

  • Revisit places at different times. A path closed to human Coen may open to the wolf at night, and vice versa.
  • Mind the clock. Because time is a resource, explore with intent rather than aimlessly.
  • Follow the people. In a dense, reactive world, NPCs and side stories are where the richest content hides.

We’ll add detailed maps and region breakdowns once the game launches and we can chart Vale Sangora properly. For now, the Everything We Know hub keeps every confirmed detail in one place.
