Coen’s Humble Beginnings in Laslea

Developer Rebel Wolves has detailed the origins of Coen, the protagonist of The Blood of Dawnwalker, highlighting a background defined by hardship rather than royal or supernatural lineage. According to the developer’s latest update, Coen was raised in Laslea, a secluded village under the rule of human lord Skender Dragosti. The settlement was heavily impacted by the Black Plague, forcing a young Coen to take on family responsibilities early to support his sick mother and three younger siblings.

To keep the family afloat, Coen worked alongside his father, Pieter, in the local silver mines. This grueling physical labor left lasting marks on both his body and resolve. In addition to teaching him the value of family duty, Pieter, a former mercenary with a mysterious past, provided Coen with his initial training in swordsmanship. These physical skills form the foundation of Coen’s combat ability before his eventual transformation into a Dawnwalker.

Ruin Exploration in the ‘Deep Down’ Quest

A gameplay preview released as part of IGN First offers a look at one of the prologue quests, titled “Deep Down.” In this segment, a young Coen—who has not yet contracted the vampire curse—enters an ancient underground ruin in search of a missing villager named Lazar.

The footage highlights an investigation mechanic used during exploration. When traversing these dark environments, players can inspect murals and ancient structures. Examining these features reveals historical lore and highlights the locations of hidden treasure or special loot.

While the primary objective is to find Lazar, the ruin holds broader secrets. According to the preview, Coen discovers far more than just a lost villager in the depths, hinting at the events that lead to his encounter with the vampirism curse.

Connecting Human Combat and World Exploration

The combination of Coen’s backstory and the early gameplay footage provides context for the structure of The Blood of Dawnwalker. Because Coen begins his journey as an ordinary human, players are expected to rely purely on traditional swordsmanship and physical agility during the opening hours. This contrast will likely highlight the dramatic shift in playstyle once he acquires vampire powers.

The village of Laslea and the surrounding region serve as the starting point for exploring the larger map of Vale Sangora. For details on how these early zones connect to the wider world, see our vale-sangora-world-guide. The sword skills taught by Pieter will also form the starting point for character development, which players can later customize through the game’s progression trees.
